5 Signs Your Thermostat Might Be Failing (And What to Do About It)
A thermostat problem is easy to mistake for a furnace or AC problem, since the symptoms often look the same: a house that's too warm, too cold, or never quite right. Before assuming your whole system is failing, it's worth checking whether the thermostat itself is the actual culprit. Here are five signs to watch for.
1. Your system won't turn on, or won't turn off
If your furnace or AC seems to ignore the temperature you set, or runs constantly regardless of what the thermostat says, that's often a sign the thermostat isn't communicating with the system correctly.
2. The temperature reading doesn't match reality
If your thermostat says 72 but the room clearly isn't, the internal sensor may be failing or miscalibrated. This is a small issue on its own, but it can cause your system to run far more than it needs to, driving up your energy bill.
3. Rooms heat or cool unevenly
While this can also point to ductwork or sizing issues, an aging or poorly placed thermostat is a common, cheaper cause worth ruling out first.
4. It's unresponsive or has a blank display
Dead batteries are the simple fix here, but if replacing them doesn't solve it, the thermostat's internal components may be the real problem.
5. Your energy bills have crept up with no clear reason
A thermostat that's misreading temperature or short-cycling your system can quietly cost you more every month, even if everything else in your home seems unchanged.
What to do about it:
Some of this is a quick DIY check: replace the batteries, make sure it's not in direct sunlight or near a heat source (both throw off the reading), and confirm it's set correctly. If the issue persists, a technician can test it in a few minutes and tell you whether it's the thermostat, the wiring, or the system itself, so you're not replacing something that isn't actually broken.
